The Chicago Political Machine
The change of the Chicago mayor is a big deal to democrats. Chicago is the most politically influenced city in this country and is so much about good-old-boy politics. The secret to Chicago style politics is that it relies heavily upon political favors and alliances. Since Mr Rahm Emanuel worked closely with Obama politics, he should fit right into the Chicago way.
Concerns, Mr Emanuel Has NO Concerns, Not Yet Anyway
Since Mr Emanuel started in Chicago he should understand that politics in Chicago is unlike politics elsewhere (with the exception of the White House and Mr Obama). However since Emanuel has been out of Chicago politics for a while, here’s a refresher for him:
Doing Business In Chicago
The Chicago’s good-old-boys and political alliances could make it impossible for Mr Emanuel to make the changes he wants to make to the city of Chicago. Political favors are at the very core of Chicago style politics. If these political favors aren’t met, doing business in Chicago could be very difficult. Over the course of the last several years, many businesses and citizens have left the city…gee, wonder why?
The Chicago Machine
Chicago politicians, the City Council and other bureaucrats within the system all think it’s about them. They all try to make themselves the primary special interest group; mainly so they can keep their jobs and keep getting re-elected and reappointed.
Chicago is a city of deal making; that’s no secret. Unfortunately, this type of politics has become disastrous because the deals have become expensive. The businesses and citizens of Chicago suffer from these deal making arrangements from increased taxes. The Chicago citizens also lose their freedom due to an increase in the laws that are passed.
But who would possibly need to protect their jobs or re-elections or re-appointments? Ahh, there is another insight into Chicago style politics. The one thousand bureaucrats in the system who earn outlandish salaries and reap abundant perks just to run the rules of the city are the ones who need to protect their jobs, re-elections and re-appointments. By the way, inside the Obama administration, they are called Czars. In Chicago they are called “the machine”. This is why Chicago is called a “pay to play” community.
Mr Emanuel cannot disrupt the Chicago style political game that has been in existence for decades, otherwise, he will be discarded as a player. The bloated city budget which includes paying for these useless bureaucrats will have to wait until Mr Emanuel figures out his political game.
