Listening to the chatter out of Washington this weekend, it’s clear that President Donald Trump is under attack from elements spanning the political spectrum. Is there any hope for the agenda he promised voters?
The president didn’t receive much praise as politicians and pundits make the talk show rounds Sunday– but there was plenty of criticism for the embattled administration.
Part of the reason was the noticeable absence of administration officials on the news show circuit following the ouster of former top White House adviser Steve Bannon last week.
Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) alluded to Bannon’s firing on CNN’s State of the Union, suggesting that constant staff shakeups in the administration are making it difficult for the president to focus on national progress.
“The problem you have is when you have chaos among your staff — staff in, staff out; new people here, new people there — it’s hard to get anything done,” Kasich said.
“You have to be focused, you have to build a team,” he added. “My concern is when you have that kind of chaotic situation in terms of staff, they need to settle it down.”
Kasich, one of Trump’s most competitive primary opponents in 2016, was asked if he had any interest in mounting a challenge to the president in 2020.
“I don’t have any plans to do anything like that,” he said, adding that he is “rooting” for Trump to “get it together.”
“What I hope is going to happen is I hope we’re going to have stability, the president is going to learn from these episodes and we’re going to do better,” Kasich said. “That’s what I hope is going to happen. We’ll have to wait and see.”
Meanwhile, Democrat Rep. Adam Schiff (Calif.) discussed his party’s efforts to declare Trump “unfit” to serve.
“I certainly think that there’s an issue with the president’s capability,” he said. “There’s some attribute of his character that seemingly makes him incapable of introspection and a broad understanding of what the country really needs.”
“And I think it’s a question that people are asking,” Schiff added. “You know, what is going on with this president? What could explain this kind of behavior?”
