The grassroots populism that put President Donald Trump in the White House is alive and well and the GOP establishment is shaken following Judge Roy Moore’s victory in Tuesday’s Alabama Republican Senate primary runoff.
Moore, the former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, cruised to an easy victory in the state despite incumbent Sen. Luther Strange’s endorsement from Trump and tens of millions of dollars in campaign spending on his behalf by political groups directed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Earlier in the week, Trump declared that he “may have made a mistake” backing Strange.
If the goal was to prove that his endorsement alone would sway conservative Alabama voters to Strange’s side despite every indication that the incumbent was the establishment’s choice, it was at least a misjudgment on Trump’s part.
